Château's autumn-winter season exhibit: “Island/Sea/Cold, Building a fire"

For nearly ten years, the Île/Mer/Froid artist duo (Hugo Lemaire and Boris Geoffroy) have been exploring and appropriating the vernacular knowledge (gathering, earthwork, basketry…) of their host territories. The singularity of their artistic production – combining work in the open air, gleaning of plant and mineral materials and recovery of existing materials – is enhanced tenfold by the emulation conferred by working with 4 hands.

At the Château d’Aubenas, the duo are invited to invest various spaces, including the monumental vaulted weighing room. Zoomorphic sculptures, plant paintings, ceramics and utilitarian objects make up an immersive landscape in motion, celebrating the wild, encounters and experiences. This ecology of work and the powerful energy of their protean works question our lifestyles at a time of great ecological upheaval.

Several of the artists’ works were created in the region during a spring 2024 residency at Atelier-refuge, in partnership with the Sur le Sentier des Lauzes association in Saint-Mélany, southern Ardèche.
